Conditions causing tiredness

Intestinal parasite infections commonly cause tiredness and upset the balance of micro-organisms in your intestines (called dysbiosis). Other key symptoms of a parasite infection include:

  • your skin, hair and nails don't look as healthy as they used to
  • a worsening of allergies and intolerances to foods, cleaning products and chemicals
  • itchy skin, itchy anus, frequent abdominal gas and bloating and/or alternating bowel motions (constipation/diarrhea)
  • You are more prone to catching colds, infections and the flu

The chances of having an intestinal parasite infection are increased if you own a pet, have had food poisoning and/or travelled to a third world country and experienced traveller's diarrhoea.

How do intestinal parasite infections contribute to tiredness?

A parasite is an organism that lives within or on host bodies, such as your own body, plants and animals. They often remain undetected because of their ability to cleverly change shape and chemistry to avoid being detected by the host's immune system.

They contribute to tiredness in two main ways:

  1. To survive, parasites feed off their host's nutrients as well as bodily cells and fluids. This can result in nutrient deficiencies and general cell dysfunction.

  2. Often parasites are found in the mucous layer of the intestinal wall. This is because they commonly enter the body via the digestive tract. Here they can irritate the gut wall and cause leaky gut syndrome and malabsorption problems. These conditions can lead to tiredness as well.

Now you know a bit more about parasitic infections and how they work, as well as the role they may be playing in the tiredness that you are experiencing.
