Conditions causing tiredness

Leaky gut syndrome often causes tiredness. Other key symptoms of leaky gut syndrome include:

  • your skin, hair and nails don't look as healthy as they used to
  • you're more prone to catching colds, infections and the flu
  • you have more allergies and intolerances to foods, cleaning products and chemicals
  • you often experience abdominal bloating, gas and cramping.

So how does leaky gut syndrome contribute to chronic tiredness?

The lining of our digestive tract forms a barrier between what we ingest and the rest of our body. It's designed to only allow through properly digested proteins, fats, starches and the vitamins and minerals they contain. Leaky gut syndrome occurs when this lining becomes more permeable or 'leakier' than normal, due to repeated irritation. This then allows larger molecules of undigested food and pathogens to cross the gut wall and enter the blood stream. This can contribute to tiredness in four main ways:

  1. The compromised leaky gut wall is less capable of absorbing the nutrients and goodness from food and this can quickly lead to malabsorption and nutrient deficiencies .
  2. The substances that cross the gut wall pollute the blood stream. As it's the liver's job to detoxify and remove them, if the liver is congested, this can lead to high levels of wastes and toxins polluting the body's fluids and tissues.
  3. If our digestive health is compromised, our immune system is also detrimentally affected and we will become more prone to colds, infections and the flu. This is because 70% of the immune system is found in the gut.
  4. Substances that cross the gut wall also irritate the immune system because they are seen as 'foreign'. In response to their presence, the immune system can mount an attack against them, resulting in autoimmune conditions as well as increased allergies and intolerances.

Now you know a bit more about leaky gut syndrome, as well as the role it may be playing in your tiredness.
